FOSDEM 2027 - Call for devrooms

Ada Devroom

Please provide a (draft) call for papers for your track:

The Ada FOSDEM community is pleased to announce the 13th edition of the Ada DevRoom! This edition will take place on Saturday morning 30 January in Belgium, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

Call for Presentations

We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room.

  • Do you have a talk you want to give?
  • Do you have a project you would like to present?
  • Would you like to get more people involved with your project?
  • Would you like to share some knowledge and lessons about Ada?

The Ada DevRoom organizers call on you to:
- discuss and help organize the details, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [5];
- for bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be!
- don't hesitate to propose a topic that you would like to present to the community, we are eager to know what you have in store for us!

We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada!

Some sample topics to think about:
- your latest project in Ada;
- how did memory safety and formal methods help you build better software;
- embedded integration, did you extend memory safety to the hardware, what is the latest device you integrated with;
- RTOS and hardware abstraction;
- co-development with AI, lessons learned;
- new developments in middleware;
- user interfaces, textual or graphical.

Speaking slots should be around 20 or 50 minutes, plus 5 or 10 minutes for Q&A. However, this schedule is flexible and we will adapt it to other formats. For example, a short technical talk can be transformed into a 10 minutes talk, plus time for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session.

Note that all talks will be streamed live and recorded (audio+video). By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed. You also agree that the contents of your talk will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content, a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license.

Submission Guidelines

Your proposal must be submitted to the FOSDEM Pretalx system [6]. If you already had an account from previous years, reuse it; if not, create a new account. If, for whatever reason, you cannot use
Pretalx, you can also submit your proposal by messaging the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [5]. If needed, feel free to contact us at the Ada-FOSDEM Mailing list or at <irvise (at) irvise.xyz> (without
spaces).

Please, fill the information asked by the Pretalx system, which
includes:
- your name, affiliation, contact info;
- the title of your talk (be descriptive and creative);
- a short descriptive and attractive abstract;
- preferred duration of your talk;
- pointers to more information if applicable;
- a short bio and photo.

See programs of previous Ada DevRooms (URLs below) for presentation examples, as well as for the kind of info we need.

Here is the slightly flexible schedule that we will follow:
- November 30, 2026: end of the submission period. Remember, we only need the information in the list above. You do not have to submit the entire talk by this date. Try to submit your proposal as early as possible. It is better to submit half of the details early than be late, so do not wait for the last minute.
- December 7, 2026: announcement of accepted talks.
- January 15, 2027: your slides should be uploaded to the Pretalx platform.
- January 30, 2027: Ada-DevRoom day!

We look forward to lots of feedback and proposals!

Regards,

Why does this proposal fit FOSDEM:

Memory safe languages are important for the software ecosystem going forward. Ada has been memory safe from its inception. The tooling around Ada is open and has seen a great deal of development in the past few years. Developers have also been creating new programs with it and FOSDEM would be a wonderful choice for them to present and share their work, and to promote collaboration on their projects. FOSDEM is also useful both as a unique meeting opportunity for the Ada community to come together and share their passion among fellow users, as well as for curious viewers who may want to learn more about the Ada language, its ecosystem and updates.

Submitters affinity to the topic:

I (Fernando) first attended FOSDEM with a presentation in 2021 (A (very) quick overview of libre mechanical software). I then succeeded Dirk Craeynest as the coordinator for the Ada devroom in FOSDEM 2022 as I had fallen in love with Ada the years prior. Nowadays I serve as an Ada community event organiser and help plenty of newcomers in the forums. In the 2027 edition of FOSDEM I will be helped by Mark Hermeling, the Head of Technical Marketing at AdaCore, and Dirk Craeynest, who was the coordinator of the Ada devroom in earlier years.

Mark Hermeling is the Head of Technical Marketing at AdaCore. Mark has over 25 years’ experience in software development tools for high-integrity, secure, embedded and real-time systems across automotive, aerospace, defence and industrial domains. As Head of Technical Marketing at AdaCore, he links technical capabilities to business value and is a regular author and speaker on on topics ranging from the software development lifecycle, DevSecOps to formal methods and software verification.

Dirk Craeynest is co-founder and President of the Ada-Belgium Organization, Vice-President of the Ada-Europe Organization, Editorial Board member of the quarterly Ada User Journal, member of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG9 (the working group managing the Ada programming language standard), and served as elected officer in the Executive Committee of ACM SIGAda (ACM’s Special Interest Group in Ada, now part of ACM SIGPLAN). Dirk is involved in the organization of several annual international events, such as Ada-Europe’s Int’l Conferences on Reliable Software Technologies (AEiC), ACM SIGAda’s Conferences and Workshops on High-Integrity Language Technology (HILT), the Ada Developer Rooms at FOSDEM, and the Ada Developers Workshops at AEiC.
